Our plan was to get up early and leave by 6:30am to go to pick up Anjanines Yukon. Turns out it has been available since LAST Thursday. We were all ready to go by 7:30, and were down at the bottom of the drive dumping the trash and locking the bottom gate when Smudge came thundering down the hill. She had jumped the upper fence!! So, unlock the gate, go back up, unlock the coach, get her harnass and the cable and tie her up. Sigh.
Finally, we were off for St. Louis, at least 2 hours away. Turns out the Yukon wasn’t in St. Louis, but in Pontoon Beach, Illinois. And we hit three huge rain squalls that made it hard to see. Plus we were all crammed in the GMC van, seven kids, two adults. Not a pleasant ride at times, although everyone was pretty good.
Once we had the Yukon, the older kids and I followed Anjanine and the little ones to the St. Louis Zoo. It was then discovered on a search for shoes that Aeden didn’t have any. We stopped at a covered patio/pavillion across from the zoo for a picnic lunch of BLT sandwiches, chips, fruit and cookies. Food always tastes better outside, even if it is raining!
It was then off on a search for a Walgreens or something where flip-flops could be found. We had to drive quite aways and were almost ready to give up and go home when we found a Walgreens and got shoes for a $1.00. We thought about going to the science museum, but it was too expensive, and since the rain had stopped, we went back to the zoo. I’m really glad we did, as it was really a nice place, not too crowded, free to get in, and I was able to take lots of nice shots. The kids really had a nice time.
We stopped at a “Country Kitchen” restaurant on the way home for dinner, where our server did a really nice job with the kids. Food wasn’t bad, either. Just before we stopped, I was really struggling to stay awake. Once home, we found Smudge all tangled up in the cable on the far side of Blue, laying in the grass. All 4 dogs happy we were home.
