December 5, North Hills, CA

I think I conked out at 2am… Pam was snoozing away. Today I did lots of laundry (Rico threw up on one throw rug last night, and Poopie wet on the bathroom throw rug, which is why I have throw rugs!!) So, Blue is tucked into my Dad’s driveway, and is just waiting to go home on the 11th.

December 4, Valley of Fire, to Boulder City, NV to North Hills, CA

Various campers are disappearing this morning. We ended up with about 13 rigs total. I noticed Mike left yesterday before Gil and Nancy, the Ashley’s and Gatchell’s drove off early this morning.

I hooked Blue up to the camp water so Pam and I could take a hot shower in the warm rig… While Pam showered, I put all the outside stuff away (chairs, table, BBQ, etc). Then it was my turn to shower. Much better stepping out to warm air, especially since Cookie said it was 29* this morning!!

Cookie, John, Beverly, Chuck and Doug are staying for a few more days. Pam and I drove up to Overton for gasoline, and remarked on what a beautiful, clean little town Overton is. From there we cruised south along the scenic route on the west edge of Lake Mead. We did encounter a lot of road construction where they are rebuilding the bridges. Got to talk to the road crew ladies while we were waiting for our pilot trucks to lead us through the construction.

We got a call from Jen and Valentin, and instead of them driving back to LA this morning, they are going to meet us in Boulder City for lunch. Since we took longer then we anticipated for the drive, they went up to Hoover Dam to look around while they waited for us.

Once in Boulder City, we were able to park Blue on a side street close to where Jen had parked. We had a wonderful lunch at Milo’s Cellar, complete with a piece of cheese cake smothered in Starbucks coffee liquor and peaches that we all shared (well, Valentin was good).

After lunch, Jen and Valentin grabbed Poopie and headed home. Pam and I wandered throughout all the little antique and gift stores. One place we stopped had a clerk who was 91 years young and what a hoot!! She was so upbeat and fun!!!
I was able to stop at a Mexican yard art store I saw on my drive up and purchased a 4 foot tall flower sculpture for the new backyard at home.

We headed west into the sunset, and discovered there are no gas stations where highway 95 and I-40 meet… oh, oh. We stopped at a station out in the middle of nowhere where gas was $3.89 a gallon and a sign inside said “don’t complain to the employees, as we have to ship every thing to the middle of nowhere, and that costs”. So, I bought $25.00 worth of fuel and kept going. We stopped in Newberry Springs to eat our leftover lunch and fill up the tank. I took a minor snooze, then off we headed after the sun. We reached North Hills at midnight.

December 3, Valley of Fire, NV

Another early morning. Pam awoke before me, and was watching the sky light up. I got up and let Rico and Smudge out, then climbed back in bed. Poopie was making noise in her crate, so Jen let her out. Pam took all three out for a minute, and Poopie jumped on Jen’s head when she came back in. That went over REALLY well.

After Pam and I got dressed, we got out last night’s leftovers and made “steak and eggs”.. well, cut up steak and potatoes reheated in the pan, and eggs scrambled in. Served with English muffins, Paradise Bakery muffins and coffee, it made a great meal. Surprisingly, neither Jen or Valentin woke up.

About 9:15 we finally nagged Jen and Valentin awake, then Nancy came to the door to let us know that a group was going to go up to the “Cabins” and “Mouse’s Tank” at 10am. The kids finished breakfast and started getting dressed. Gil talked Pam into going with everyone in their rig, and the kids and I followed in Jen’s car with the dogs.

We all had fun taking photos at the Cabins, and Jen, Valentin and I went for a little walk in the immediate area. As we drove up to Mouse’s Tank, we could see Gil driving away in the distance. Mouse’s Tank trail is a really easy walk with lots of weathered rock and petroglyphs. Since we were the only group there at the time, I let Rico go off leash.

Back at Atlatl (at-L, at-L) campground, we all piled onto Pam’s bed to watch “The Hangover”, a goofy bachelor party movie. I forgot to mention that today is cold and windy, so no one is hanging around outside unless they are walking. I heard it was 34* this morning, and may be colder tomorrow. brrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!

At 3pm we had our group ice cream social. Everyone bundled up and eating ice cream!! There were 5 flavors of ice cream, 4 kinds of cookies, a cream pie, brownies, ice cream toppings (we brought strawberry jam and chocolate sauce), almonds, mini cream-puffs and Jen talked me into bringing our defrosted mixed berries. It looked so funny to see everyone huddled around the fire eating ice cream. Jen ate two big bowls!! (and as Pam points out "a brownie, too"!)

Just before dark Nancy and Gil left to get ready to fly to New Jersey on Saturday morning, and Jen and Valentin are going to go to Las Vegas tonight. Pam and I are Poopie sitting until we get back to LA.

Our evening was spent re-arranging again, listening to 80’s rock (Eagles, Doobies, etc), reading, typing, sewing and knitting. Poopie is being slightly clingy… she has been wearing a sweater the entire time, so I don’t think she is cold, maybe she is missing her “mom and dad”.

We had a light dinner of soup and crackers. Since we had a heavy breakfast, we didn’t have lunch, just snacks and with the ice cream, we weren’t super hungry.

I plan to turn in by 8pm. YAWN.

December 2, Valley of Fire, NV

Pam and I woke up around 6am this morning and watched the moon set and the sun light up the sky. Because of the rock formations around us, one doesn’t actually see the sun until later in the morning.

After we each took a shower in the bath house (hot water, unheated room), we gathered with the rest of the Lazy Dazers for our potluck breakfast. I brought Paradise Bakery muffins, there was Irish steel cut oatmeal, egg and green chili bake, and other yummy things to eat. We finished breakfast with a brief business meeting about upcoming meets for the group. There was also a vote, should Lisa spend $$$ and fix up Blue or buy a new/newer rig. It was unanimous…. Blue should go to Jen and a new rig should be in Lisa’s immediate future. Poor Blue…..

We did a slight departure this time with our group photo, as we made sure everyone brought their dog!! There are usually one or three dogs, not the entire bunch due to the bark and fuss factor. But everyone was good. The other change was using the red rocks of the parks instead of a Lazy Daze in the background.

At 10:30 we piled into various vehicles to drive over to the visitor’s center, then took a tour up to the White Dome area. Those that wanted to hike followed the trail down and around, the others went back to camp. Jen was climbing everything she could, and by the time we got back to the car, my legs and knees were screaming. We hiked in soft sand for about 1-2 miles. Can you spell tired??

Back at camp, we chatted with Pam about her nice day just enjoying a nice, calm, quiet day in the beautiful Valley. Jen and Valentin made us sandwiches for lunch, then we girls wandered up to the ramada to make bracelets and anklets. Nancy was generous with her time and supplies to help the beginners make jewelery and wine glass dangles. This Knitster just worked on a scarf that Pam will claim when it is done.

Before it got too dark, which is by 5pm, we fired up the BBQ and Valentin cooked the carne asada. It was served with baked potatoes, nopales salsa, wine and margaritas. Desert was vanilla nonfat yogurt and strawberries. YUM, YUM!! After dinner, we retired to the “back room” for two spirited games of UNO, which took up a couple of hours of our time (not to mention tested our long-time friendships!!) Now Pam is playing solitare with a real deck of cards, Jen and Valentin are watching Night at the Museum II and I’m ready to call it a night!

December 1, Valley of Fire, NV

Wow!! What a beautiful spot!! But I didn’t realize that until after sunrise. The entire group got a rude awakening before dawn this morning. The trash truck came to dump the park bins, with all the clanking and groaning that entails!! Poor Rico was so scared he jumped up on the bed. I thought the neighbors coach blew up and it was a fire truck with all the flashing lights. Once I woke up enough to realize what it was, I just rolled over and went back to sleep.

The dogs woke me up at 8:30am, so I got dressed and took them out for a walk. There are 8 rigs here already. Almost everyone has a dog or two with them, or cats!! We didn’t get too far on our walk because we kept stopping to chat with other campers.

I took another walk after breakfast and when I returned, I realized I managed to erase all of my pictures!! I don’t know what I did, but I’m sure glad I downloaded yesterdays’ photos last night. Since I just took pictures of the wonderful rock formations here in the campground, I took another walk and re-took the shots, and immediately downloaded them!

After lunch of PB and J with milk, a bunch of us got together and walked to the Arch campground, and all of us had dogs. Another camper even asked if we were a dog club!! The older Arch campground has wonderful sites amongst the rocks, but no water or electric hook ups. On the way back some of us climbed the staircase to the petroglyphs here.

We planned our Happy Hour at 4pm, and as usual there was wonderful food to eat. Just as we all finished eating, we could see a car coming up the road, and yep, it was Jennifer, Valentin and Pam. So they got to eat a little, too. Little Poopie, Valentin's 6 month old English Cocker Spaniel, was a big hit with everyone, and we all got to chat.

It didn’t take too long to move things around in Blue so the three newcomers could settle in. Jen and Valentin got the back bedroom, Pam has the dinette and I get the cab-over. I had already removed most of the extra junk I carry around when it’s just the dogs and I traveling. So now, Blue is just a big bedroom.

We put on The Mask of Zorro to watch, but I don’t think any one of us watched too much. I turned in fairly early, probably around 9 or so.

November 30, Surprise, AZ to Valley of Fire, NV

Well, the dogs and I are off in Blue for a new adventure!! I finished loading the cold food and left over items this morning, then drove to Paradise Bakery to pick up 2 dozen yummy muffins for the upcoming Breakfast Buffet with the Lazy Daze Southwest group!!

After breakfast of oatmeal in a cookie bowl, the “kids” and I drove to the local Discount Tire to have Blue’s tires checked, then, off we went.. heading north through Wickenburg on our way to Valley of Fire State Park, near Las Vegas, NV. I decided to stop in Wikieup just to look around, and ended up buying a neat Navajo pot and a wolf t-shirt. From there I stopped just outside of Kingman for a nap and gasoline for Blue.

Crossing Hoover Dam wasn’t too bad, I pulled off for inspection, clipped up the dogs and warned the ranger to step back when I opened the door. Smudge and Rico don’t like ANYONE in a uniform, and Smudge was all business. The ranger looked around inside while we waited outside, then I put the dogs in and opened the outside compartments. And, silly me, dropped my keys so I couldn’t drive off. Fortunately the truck behind me was able to pull around. Turns out the keys slipped under the throw rug.

I stopped to take some photos at the dam itself, and really went back in time. When I was around 8 or 9, my Dad used to take us camping on the shores of Lake Mead, with just a cot and sleeping bag. What memories!! I drove through Boulder City with the same memories.

Once through Las Vegas it didn’t take long to get to exit 75 and head off into the hills. By the time I reached the campground, it was totally dark, but with a full moon, I could see the silhouettes of other Lazy Dazes. I make one circuit before picking a semi level spot. Nancy came over to greet me, almost all the others were tucked in where it was warm. It took me twice as long to level up as I drove off my leveling blocks on the first try!

I took the dogs out for a stroll in the moonlight, fixed dinner and turned in!

October, Surprise, AZ

Well, some fun (yeah, right) developments!!

We charged up Blue's battery and got him down to the RV service shop. Turns out the chassis battery bit the big one, which wasn't a surprise. BUT!! the last two days on the road I kept hearing a metallic ticking... turns out the pulley that holds the serpentine belt CRACKED, but didn't break into a zillion pieces!!! Lucky one there!Blue's new vent covers Mike put on in Albuquerque, cracked pulley, below.. OUCH!
Another thing I did was find a TOAD!!! He is in very nice shape, and has 51,000 miles, automatic and 4 wheel drive. I did need to get 2 new tires and new front brakes, and a Blue Ox baseplate to tow with. The price was right, too!!Blue and his new friend at "Grandma's" house.
So, all ready for the next trip, almost. Then my heart gets broken!! Turns out Blue doesn't have frame rails to the very rear bumper, so I can't have a hitch welded on without dropping the waste water tanks and having frame rails extended!! ARGGGG!!

So, anyhow, Blue's next adventure is in December.

Friday October 16, Surprise AZ

Surprise!! I went out to start Blue to go to my Mom’s house to remove the hitch rack and guess what?? Dead battery. Actually, I’m lucky, as chassis batteries usually only last 2-3 years here in Arizona, and Blue’s battery is almost 6 years old. So, I’ll just charge up the battery on Monday and take Blue for service Tuesday, as previously planned, and have them check the charging system just to make sure all is okay!

Thursday October 15, Cameron to Surprise, AZ

Oh, dummy me!!! I’m a day ahead of myself and wasn’t supposed to go home until Friday!!

I actually slept well considering we were so close to the highway.
The old suspension bridge, below, was built in the early 1900's.. the modern bridge is in front, so you can see we were pretty close to the highway.
After breakfast we headed south towards Flagstaff on route 89. I stopped at the Second Chance Center for Animals, but they don’t open until 11, so I decided to drive down to Flagstaff to go to Bookman’s, the used entertainment (books, CDs, etc) store.

I wandered in Bookman’s for a bit, then went into Michael’s Arts & Crafts, and when I walked out, I realized I’d let Blue’s headlights on (route 89 is one that you need to have your lights on while driving). So, yep, dead battery. I called Triple A, and because I have a “classic” California policy, they couldn’t jump start an RV in Arizona. The only reason I called them first is that I saw a AAA service truck cruising the parking lot. So, I then called Progressive, and they had someone out in 20 minutes. A nice, young Native American chickie came and 10 minutes later, we were on our way back to Second Chance.

The facility at Second Chance is newer and quite roomy. I wandered around and visited the dogs and cats, then made a donation in John Nesbit’s name (my boss that passed away unexpectedly in his sleep 2 months ago). I’ve been bummed by his death (we had seen him the night before he died), but it didn’t hit me until I handed over the paperwork for the donation, then I burst into tears.

I left Blue running, but locked the doors with the dogs inside while I visited the shelter. From there I stopped down the road at the gas station, and turned Blue off to gas up. No problem starting up again. We trundled our way home to Surprise….

Once home I unloaded all my laundry and most of the food stuffs. I can’t believe how tired I am, so I will leave the refrigerator and clean up for tomorrow.

Wednesday October 14, Chama, NM to Cameron, AZ

I awoke before dawn and took the dogs out for a potty. They have both been scratching, so I gave them a Benedryl last night, and I think I’m getting paid back this morning (yuck).

I gave the kids their breakfast outside (oh, yeah, it’s COLD!) and went to the bath house to take a shower. Took me half way through my shower to realize half of the shower head was on the floor!! No wonder the water was so strong, the aerator fell off. I made myself eggs and toast, and cleaned up and took the dogs for another walk to the trash can.

I drove into Chama Village to mail post cards and get a cup of coffee. From there, we headed west. Smudge started in on her whiney thing, so I stopped a couple of times with no luck. I was really pissed at her because I’m not sure if she has to go or just wants to stop. I kept her leash on so she wouldn’t wander all over and distract me, and in about 50 miles I stopped again. She finally went, but I was ready to just shove her out of the coach!!Old ranch, above... peaceful horses....

I actually turned around to photograph this red ranch building and the changing trees....
Shiprock, in the distance, above. Weird clouds, below...and wide open spaces.

I missed my turn in Shiprock, so modified my route to circle Monument Valley. But first, I detoured to Four Corners, where it was very windy. I looked at all the artist displays twice, and ended up buying a beautiful little pot, by a known artist. My first piece of authentic Indian art!! I also snagged a couple of post cards and a cinnamon/sugar frybread for lunch. With a little patience, I was able to get a shot of the Four Corners Monument without people on it! After eating my frybread, I took the kids for a walk, where they were excellent. Maybe something about me being quite upset with them this morning helped.
Blue with the Four Corners flags in the background
There is such a variety of geologic shapes in the Monument Valley area. I drove slowly, and took a lot of pictures. There was one pull out that had quite a drop off, and Blue lurched and the dish cupboard door flew open, scattering dishes and cups. Dogs flew, too!! I almost did another drop off, but stopped before I got to the edge of the road, as the drop was about 6-8”!! They resurfaced the road, but not the pull offs! I did notice lots and lots of pull offs, which makes it nice for picture taking and gazing. There wasn’t much traffic going my way, but I was sure to look behind me before I pulled over, just in case!Do you see the faces in the rocks?
More "wide open spaces" shots...

This is the Mexican Hat that Mexican Hat is named for.....

I went up to the visitors center, took more photos and looked around. Blue and a mitten....
There is an electric train track on the Navajo Nation....thought I was in Europe.
I thought about staying in Tuba City, but the RV park there is full. I also realized that Allen and Uni are going to be in Flagstaff Friday and Saturday, so I will just go on home tomorrow.

I’m in Cameron at the Cameron Trading Post RV Park. This is a very basic set up, full hookups, right next to the road. Quite cheap, though. I first went to the western side of the highway, but the RV park is on the eastern side. So, when traffic was clear, I drove across the road. Then I discovered that the check in desk is at the far end of the trading post on the other side of the road. I did the dash across the road on foot. I paid ($14), and looked around for a minute. Then ran back across the road to Blue. I tried 3 sites to get somewhat level, as I’m too tired to drag the blocks out. I wanted to be as far away from the road as possible, but I’m kind of in the middle. When the trucks go by it’s noisy.

At the trading post, there were a bunch of kids/young adults in liederhosen playing brass instruments in the umm-paa style. At least they are quiet now.

Tuesday October 13, Chama, NM

I woke up at 6:30am, ready to start today’s adventure. I made a reservation for the Cumbres and Toltec steam train that goes from Chama to Antonito, CO today. In fact, I called about the train time and whether the train was still running and kennel availability, and forgot to make the reservation and inquire about cost!! Dummy me. So I called back yesterday and confirmed a seat. I had already confirmed the kennel space.

A little before 8am I parked Blue in front of Dr. Johnson’s mobile vet’s office to drop off the pups and leave Blue. This is right across the street from the Chama train depot. Another couple brought their border collie, Erin, to stay in the other side of the kennel. Smudge grabbed the kennel door after it was locked and was pulling it toward her, so to be on the safe side, I put 3 bungie cords on the door, and Dr. Johnson chained the door with a lock. The only way Smudge could get out would be to climb the fence separating the two kennels, land in Erin’s side, then climb out. I figured if my dogs did get out, they would just lay under Blue.

Since my train didn’t leave until 10am, I wandered in the few stores that were open early and bought a few more Christmas gifts and splurged on a really neat denim blue sweater. I was also able to purchase a coffee (good) and fudge at the same store. Decorating for Halloween.... looking down the main drag in Chama Village, yard art, 2nd below..
I peeked in on the dogs when I went to drop off my goodies and go potty, and Smudge was perched on the doghouse, and Rico was sitting near the door. All was good.

The train route is 64 miles, and one can bus either way, or train half-way and back. I had elected to train up the entire route and bus back. Before boarding the train, I chatted with some cyclists that had ridden from Antonito to Chama the previous day, and were riding the train back. As it was windy and high altitude, I had to give these guys credit for a tough ride.Train #484 getting ready to roll.
Inside the train station...

Cyclists out in the cold, grey air, inside of the passenger car.....
I ended up sitting next to Julie, a rural mail carrier from Iowa of my vintage who is into trains and fast cars!!! How fun is that!!???
Interesting shot while we were stopped to take on water in Cumbres..

This is the work train that Julie's son was on, it was actually going the same way we were, but the grade is so steep the trains really loop back on each other so the train can carefully climb.
We had fun chatting the entire way to Osier, which was our lunch spot. Lunch was included in the train ticket price, was all you could eat, including dessert. I had turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, dressing, cranberries, green beans and peach pie for dessert. I was stuffed, and I didn’t go back for seconds!! Trestle bridge, above, train in Osier, below.... love the sky!!

A huge portion of food, and all you could eat. No, I didn't get seconds!!
It was quite windy up there, and in the 10,000 foot range! The sky was beautiful, with lots of puffy white clouds and not a hit of last nights thunder storm! I got some wonderful photos and videos and for the first time ever filled up a 2 gig memory card before my trip was over!! Glad I bought a spare card (on sale) in Albuquerque!! I also discovered I had the wrong setting on the camera, which is why the card filled up so fast!Perfect timing, the conductor stuck his head out just as I took the shot... leftover leaves from the peak turning time a few weeks ago.
The second half of the ride wasn’t as scenic as the first, and we had different seats. It was fun chatting up all the folks in the car, including a couple that have RV'd full timed for 11 years. There was a couple with 8 ½ year old well behaved triplets (2 girls, 1 boy) and a couple from Texas.Antonito station and water wheel outside the gift shop.
Back in Chama.... just a little railroad history, below...

We had just a few minutes to check out the gift shop and board the bus to come back (49 miles on route 17). Our driver gave us a smooth ride back, and everyone gave the driver and the train crew on board a big hand!!

Dr. Johnson had only done the half train trip, and said the "kids" were very good. I opened the door to Blue and Smudge jumped right in. Rico had to be needy dog and “come up” to make sure it was really me!! I thanked the Dr. for providing such good service. OH! The kennel with lined with about 8” of hay, which Smudge rearranged into a mountain!!

It was just getting dark as I pulled back into the Twin Rivers RV Park, and it is cold (I heard it might be in the 20’s tonight). I made myself dinner, gave the kids a Benedryl (their skin is really dry and they are itchy) and am catching up with my journal and tidying up. Smudge is lying on the floor snoring.

I heard from Steve that our friends Allen and Uni are in Colorado, and coming back through Flagstaff. We may try to meet up with them on Friday, which will be fun!! I haven’t seen them for a while, and I had planned on going through Flag anyway!! So Steve would drive up to Flagstaff and we could have an early dinner. We shall see!
